Expert Witness Overview

Overview

An Expert Witness is used to record the details and qualifications of an individual who is considered an expert in a specific skill or subject area. Expert Witnesses support the assessment process by verifying evidence in areas where the Assessor may not have specialist expertise.

User Roles

This feature is relevant for the following user roles:

  • Assessor
  • Trainee Assessor
  • Centre Manager (for setup and management)

What Is an Expert Witness?

An Expert Witness is someone who has in‑depth knowledge, skills, or qualifications in a specific area directly related to the evidence being assessed. Their role is to provide supporting testimony where the Assessor may not be a subject specialist.

How Expert Witnesses Are Used

Expert Witnesses are typically used when the Assessor needs additional verification from someone with specialist knowledge. For example:

  • An Assessor can assess a learner’s use of Excel but may not be an expert in advanced Excel functions. An Expert Witness who is an experienced Excel user can provide a supporting witness testimony.
  • This applies to specialist machinery, technical software, sector‑specific practices, or any area requiring expert oversight.

Related Processes

Expert Witnesses can be added to a learner’s record and selected within relevant assessments.

Guidance on assigning an Expert Witness to an assessment can be found .
